Volunteers Wanted

Can you help? - Victoria Park Athletic Club is run by dedicated volunteers. The club would not exist or provide the service to athletes from the community we serve without the support of our volunteers.

We're constantly recruiting and training coaches to support our athletes on each of our four training evenings. There is no minimum commitment required and you don't need to have a background in athletics in particular or sport in general. We welcome all volunteers and full training will be provided by the club.

If you would like to be involved in coaching at any level, please contact  Gordon Innes (Secretary).

Endurance Report

The club’s endurance runners have been keeping active during the summer months competing in club colours all over the country and beyond. With the cross country season and the first of the relays only a few weeks away, it will be good to see as many of our endurance runners as possible getting the miles in; building their endurance strength.

I have listed below a number of the notable performances:

HALF MARATHON

Alexander Lewis (U23) was 17th in the Isle of Mull Half Marathon in 1:38:50 on 6th August. Andy Law was 1st Vet 60 and 12th overall in the Mull of Kintyre Half Marathon in an impressive 1:29:56 on 28th May.

5000m TRACK

The British Transplant Games were held in North Lanarkshire from 27th July to 30th July. Daniel Smith won the Gold Medal in the 5000m track race in a time of 22:17 in the 15-17 age category.

The British Miler meet at Scotstoun Stadium saw Sarah Potter run a 17:32.42 PB and Claire Thompson ran 19:14.04 in the European Masters in Aarhus, Denmark gaining a bronze medal.

10K ROAD

The Scottish Veteran Harriers 10K road race took place on 13th August round Pollok Park. Gerry Craig (38:20) was the fastest from our club in 8th place, followed by Michael Craig (39:18), Andy Lay (40:08) and Tom Ord (45:14). The Paisley 10k took place on 20th August with Mark Ashby (38.37) and Gordon Murray (47.20) both representing our club.

PARKRUNS

We continue to have healthy numbers turn out at our local parkrun in Victoria Park with Mark Ashby (18:28) the fastest of our runners in the last few weeks just ahead of Paul Lennie.

Abbey and Aisling McGhee both ran the Bushy parkrun in London on 12th August with Abbey (18:44) finishing just ahead of her sister. Four members of the Wright family ran the Springburn parkrun on 5th August with Blayne (19:15) finishing ahead of Valencia, Tuscany and Gavin. Staying with the family theme, Linwood parkrun on 26th August saw myself and Robyn Connolly, Jan Bissett and Amy Bissett all splash our way round a very wet course with Amy (21.17) finishing second female and breaking her parkrun PB.

Emma Kay has run the most parkrun locations recently with her best time being at the Preston parkrun where she was first female finisher in 21:24

OTHER ENDURANCE RUNS

Gerry Craig ran the 95 mile West Highland Way from Milngavie to Fort William in 21 hours 10 minutes and 17 seconds, finishing 22nd overall. Although it was in mid-summer on 24th June the cold wet weather made the race even tougher than normal.

Fully recovered, on 5th August Gerry ran the Devil o’ the Highlands trail race, a mere 42 miles in 6 hours 43 minutes, for 14th place and Mark Ashby was 1st Vet 55 in 7 hours 37 minutes. Ralph Connolly was 1st Vet 50 and 37th place overall in The New York Road Runners 4 mile road race in Central Park, New York on 8th July in a time of 25:55

Pictures

Group TrainingWe're always looking for fresh content to add to the website.  The site looks and feels more interesting when we have recent pictures of our current crop of athletes.  If you do take a good picture of any of our athletes, please send it to Gordon Innes for inclusion on the website.

We do also have an interest in pictures of past members in their glory days.  Don't hesitate to send them in, preferably with a bit of a story attached.
