The Club has not formally organised a trip to the Youth Games in Gothenburg this year due to the financial uncertainty around Brexit. However, many athletes and their parents are planning to go with a little support from the club. The Gothenburg Youth Games will be held over Friday the 28th, Saturday the 29th and Sunday the 30th of June.
This is a highly competitive and prestigious event held at the world famous Ullevi Stadium, where Jonathan Edwards set his still unbeaten World Triple Jump Record in 1995. The numbers competing over 3 days last year reached a record 8,258 athletes. 40% of the competitors travelled from outside Sweden to take part.
The event is open to all athletes born before 1st Jan 2008 although the club will only provide travel assistance to athletes who are 2nd year U13 or older.
To qualify for travel assistance, we expect all athletes to compete in at least two events in Gothenburg and should have achieved one standard or be close to two standards in any events on this list. The events listed are not necessarily those they will compete in at the games.
Coaches who regularly work with a VP-Glasgow group will also be eligible for assistance.
The full program of events can be found at this link. Entries will cost about £8 per event. The club will submit the entries on your behalf in April. There is a minimum standard for throws events which is listed on the pdf file. Some preliminary rounds of the long jump for younger athletes may be held outside the main arena.
Hopefully the brexit situation will have been resolved by 2020 and we can travel together as a club.
