National Cross Country Championships

The 2018 National Cross Country Championships took place at Callendar Park, Falkirk on Saturday 24th February and the club continued the success of recent years with a number of individual and team medals.Valencia Wright

With over 2,000 athletes aged from 10 to 80+ descending on Falkirk from all over the country, many in the athletics community regard this event as the highlight of the athletics year in Scotland and it would be difficult to argue against that view this year. Perfect weather meant the conditions were ideal for spectators and combined with the recent dry spell the course was remarkably free of mud, meaning athletes were happy to hang around to cheer on our athletes in the later races helping to create an excellent atmosphere.

Valencia Wright got the day off to a great start winning the silver medal for the U13 Girls (at the time of writing the U13 girls results are not available).

Fraser Gilmour was 6th across the line in the U13 Boys race and combined with Saul McGlennan, Finlay Waters and Jake Speirs to get team bronze.

Lily-Jane Evans-Haggerty won the gold medal in the U15 Girls, repeating her gold medal winning performance from the last two years and along with Joanna Littlefield, Jenna Little and Rhian Callan the U15 Girls just missed out on a team medal with 4th place.

Callum Byrne (12th), Blayne Wright (24th) and Jack McKinnon (55th) were our top U15 boys.Anna Tait

In the U20 Women’s race, Gillian Black was 6th and Holly Little was 11th.

Anna Tait won the bronze medal in the Senior Women’s race with Donna Finlayson 134th out of 271 finishers on the 10k course.

In the Senior Men’s race, Keiron Rafferty ran well, finishing in 21st place out of 623 finishers. Peter Jardine was our top “veteran” finisher just ahead of Gerry Craig. Duncan Thomson and Tom Ord were our other veteran finishers.

Thanks to Charlie Murray and Jim Harvey who organised the delivery and removal of the club tent, all our athletes who competed and the family and friends who came along to support them and contribute to the great atmosphere. Injuries and lack of availability this year meant our numbers were down in the older age groups but hopefully next year we will have a larger turnout.
