SAL Match 2

Match 2 of the Scottish Men's League was held in Aberdeen on the 10th of June.

Our team was much improved for the long trip to Aberdeen, taking 13 athletes compared to the tiny team of 5 which had fought hard to finish 7th in Match 1 at Grangemouth. This time we finished 4th equal (with Central AC) on 247 points and hauled ourselves up to 6th overall in League Division 1. We did this despite a considerable weakness in track events, where we failed to compete in 4 events (110 and 400 Hurdles, Steeplechase and 5,000m) and fielded only one in 3 others. However, we contested every field event except B Hammer and were superb in the relays.

Star of the show was Euan Urquhart, who produced two individual PBs: he took 2nd equal in Pole Vault with 3.80m, 3cm better than his previous, and was close to clearing 4.00, a height he can surely get this year; he then blasted to 2nd in 200m, 0.1 behind the winner, with a legal nil wind clocking of 22.35secs, a full 0.4 better than his previous legal best. He was the outstanding link in both our relay winning teams, zooming round the bend on leg 3 of the 4x100 to hand Jax Thoirs an unassailable lead for a 44.14 clocking (slowing down!). He set off on leg 1 of the 4x400 with a mission, was miles ahead at the 130m break, then stretched that to well over 20m at the changeover, and we were never headed, though threatened by speedsters from Falkirk on legs 3 and 4. Our relay heroes (see below) pulled up 18 points to draw level with Central in these last 2 events of the day.

Euan was not our only PB merchant. Steven Bryce, who had been knocking on the door of breaking 4 mins 14 secs in the 1500m for some time, did this in style with 4:12.81 for a good 4th place. He's on song, having also posted a PB in the 800m this summer.

The whole team performed creditably. Other performances of note were: David Clark's return to his old form with a season's best of 23.11 in 200m (-0.7 wind); Adam Orr's B victory in Pole Vault with 3.60m, and narrow failure at a PB of 3.80m; Lewis McGuire's expected win in High Jump, 2.05m, in his first outing for us in this league: our only clean sweep event victory in Javelin through Adam Boyle, 1st A 55.11m, and Alexander Lewis, 1st B in a season's best of 47.68m.

Here are our relay heroes: 4x100m: David Clark, Cian O'Donnell, Euan Urquhart, Jax Thoirs, 44.14 secs; 4x400m Euan Urquhart, Christpher Boyle, Sean McCormick, Jax Thoirs, 3mins 29.11secs. We await official photofinish splits for the 4x4, usually sent out during the week.

Thanks to our volunteer officials, Jim Harvie, Julie Boyle and Lorraine Bryce and to all supporters who made the long journey on a rather misty and chilly day, and to our friends in Kilbarchan AC who shared their hire coach with us.
